Now, the whole family can fall under Morocco’s spell on this eight-day adventure from magical Marrakech to the old pirate port of Essaouira, covering everything from camel-clad deserts to ocean beaches along the way. So, whether it’s in spice-infused back alleys, among crumbling Roman ruins or below the snow-capped Atlas Mountains – the allure of Morocco will prove impossible to ignore.

Day 1: Marrakech

Location: Marrakech

Accommodation: Hotel Gomassine or similar

Salaam Aleikum! Welcome to Morocco. Your adventure begins in Marrakech – a feast for the senses and a world of spice markets, Amazigh music, carpets, acrobats and perfumed gardens. You can arrive at any time today before your welcome meeting at 5 pm. If you have an arrival transfer booked, please look for a representative when you arrive at the airport. Your hotel is located just outside the city walls around the old medina, about a 30-minute walk to the main square, Djemaa el-Fna – the largest public square in the world. It's also near a lot of local shops and restaurants, so there’s plenty to do if you arrive early. After your meeting, why not head out to dinner with the group and get to know each other.

Day 2: Aroumd

Location: Aroumd

Accommodation: Dar Tajine or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch, dinner

Today's adventure begins with a drive over the High Atlas Mountains to the village of Imlil – the largest village in the Mizane Valley. You’ll store your main luggage here, before continuing on foot to the traditional mountain village of Aroumd with your daypack. If you don't feel comfortable with the walk, your leader can arrange a mule for you to ride instead (the kids will surely love the mule ride!). Perched on a rocky outcrop, the remote village of Aroumd offers views across the High Atlas Mountains and a unique opportunity to experience traditional Amazigh culture. Spend tonight in a family-run mountain home (gite) in Aroumd. Surrounded by the smell of woodstoves and bread, you’ll meet the host family and enjoy some traditional food together.

Day 3: Taroudant

Location: Taroudant

Accommodation: Hotel L'arganier or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast, dinner

This morning, you'll have a bread cooking demonstration for breakfast and maybe an early morning walk around the village of Imlil. Transfer to Taroudant, passing through some Amazigh villages and across the High Altas Mountains via the Tizi n Tast, which gives you a great view of the largest plain of Sous. Arriving at your accommodation in the late afternoon, maybe take the kids for a swim in the pool and have a relaxing evening.

Included Activities:
-Armed - Bread cooking demonstration

Day 4: Taroudant

Location: Taroudant

Accommodation: Hotel L'arganier or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch

Today after breakfast, take a fun donkey ride through the picturesque oasis of Tiout. This is not your average city tour – by exploring the gorgeous oasis on the back of a donkey, you’ll be immersed in the local way of life and travel as the locals do. The oasis is full of palm trees and streams of running water, giving an exotic atmosphere full of sights, smells and sounds. By hiring these donkeys and their guides, you'll be directly supporting the local community and ensuring that the animals are well taken care of, providing ample food and shelter. After your tour, join a local woman in her home for a traditional homemade lunch. Not only will this experience leave you feeling full and happy, but it also supports the local community by providing income for the women in the village who prepare the meal with love and care.

Included Activities:
-Taroudant – Local Lunch
-Taroudant – Donkey Ride

Day 5: Essaouira

tuntung81
oceansurfpoint

Location: Essaouira

Accommodation: Hotel Souiri or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast, lunch

After breakfast this morning, you'll travel up the coast to Sidi Kaouki. Mount a camel and take in the view as the waves crash along the shoreline, taking in the awesome scenery as you plod along. This may well be one of the highlights of your trip! Enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach, then board the bus again and head to Essaouira. This delightful artists' town is a former Portuguese trading colony and was once home to sizeable British and Jewish populations. The town faces a group of rocky islands called the Mogador and is surrounded by an expanse of sandy beaches and dunes. It's still a busy fishing port, and its pretty harbour is filled with tiny colourful fishing boats which go out early every morning.

Included Activities:
-Sidi Kaouki - Camel Ride

Day 6: Essaouira

Location: Essaouira

Accommodation: Hotel Souiri or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast

Today is free for you to explore Essaouira. Everything in the small centre is within walking distance, and the beach is perfect for a long walk. Why not wander the harbour and its adjacent fish markets where you can witness the daily auction – a freshly-cooked plate of the day's catch is highly recommended. Maybe take the kids to browse some of the many shops and art galleries where unique local pieces are on display. The town is becoming renowned for its burled Thuya wood, delicately formed, inlaid and polished with oils. The scent from the oils fills the air and makes walking through the streets a delight for the senses!

Day 7: Marrakech

Location: Marrakech

Accommodation: Hotel Gomassine or similar

Meals Included: breaksfast

Leaving Essaouira behind, journey inland to Marrakech. Enjoy an afternoon walking tour of the city centre, taking in the main sights on your way to the sprawling Djemaa el-Fna main square and souq. As is usual in a souq, individual trades and crafts are concentrated in one street or area, so the shoemakers are all next to each other, as are the jewellers, potters and weavers. This is the best place in Morocco to sharpen your bargaining skills, and you are almost certain to be tempted by some of the extraordinary variety of merchandise on display – perhaps a pair of traditional Moroccan slippers or some spices. The market almost has the atmosphere of a medieval fair. Fortune tellers and jugglers are among those who vie to entertain you. In the evening, wonderful smells waft by as food stalls cook up their local delicacies.

Included Activities:
-Marrakech - Medina walking tour

Day 8: Marrakech

Location: Marrakech

Meals Included: breaksfast

Your trip comes to an end this morning. There are no activities planned for the final day and you are free to depart the accommodation at any time. If you’d like to extend your stay in Marrakech, just get in touch with your booking agent ahead of time.

-Marrakech - A Taste Of Marrakech: Inside the Medina Urban Adventure

Accommodation

  • The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
  • Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
  • GENERAL ROOMING CONFIGURATIONS:
  • Family of two: All family groupings of two will be accommodated in a twin room.
  • Family of three: Wherever possible we will put you in a triple room. Please be aware that in some places triple rooms are in short supply. This means that a triple room will often be a twin room with a rollaway bed or mattress on the floor. Where triple rooms aren’t available it will be at your discretion which of your family takes the single room.
  • Family of four or more: You will most likely be accommodated in two twin rooms. Where possible, we will accommodate your family in a quadruple room.
  • While we do our very best to ensure that family groups are roomed close together (in some cases, we can arrange adjoining rooms), we can’t guarantee this. Most family holidays occur during peak season and we sometimes have little to no control over the exact placement of rooms within a hotel. Please be understanding if we are unable to room your family in immediate proximity of one another.

Included Activities

  • Armed - Bread cooking demonstration
  • Tinmel - Tinmel Mosque
  • Camel Ride
  • Taroudant Tannery
  • Marrakech - Guided Walking Tour

Important Information

  • 1. Please note that these trips are for adults and children travelling together and there must be at least one child under 18 with you.
  • 2. Minimum age for children on this trip is 5 years old. Please note that anyone aged under 18 must be accompanied by (and share accommodation with) a parent or legal guardian.
  • 3. A discount of 10% applies on this trip to children 17 years and under at time of travel.
  • 4. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement excludes Day 2 (Aroumd) where you will be in shared accommodation and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.
  • 5. While Wi-Fi is available in our hotels it is important to note that wi-fi works best in the hotel foyer and will be very slow in the rooms. An easier option may be to purchase a SIM card in Morocco to stay connected.
  • 6. Ramadan is an exciting time to travel through Morocco but there are also a few things to bear in mind. Meal times will be a lot later than you may be used to, in particular dinner. You will find restaurants will open at 7–7.30 pm in the evening for dinner. Which will mean your family may not be eating dinner until 8–8.30 pm. Likewise breakfast may not start until 7 am. As you travel through the countryside there will be limited small road side cafes to stop at. Your leader will pre-plan where to stop to ensure families have access to snacks and bathroom stops along the way. Morocco is a Muslim country therefore alcohol is not readily available, particularly during Ramadan.

Mode of Transport

Check out our Q&As

  • Is this trip right for you

A camel trek along the Atlantic Ocean (Day 5) is a highlight of the trip for many travellers. But if you'd rather not ride a camel, you can always walk alongside the camels instead. It's a gentle, relaxing walk of about an hour each way.

The walk to the homestay in the High Atlas Mountains can be hard in some places. Please talk to your leader if you would like to opt to travel on the back of a mule for this portion of the trip.

Summer temperatures in Morocco can get very hot. If you're travelling in the warmer months, be sure to wear layers, use sun protection and drink plenty of water. Nights can get quite cold, so warm clothes are essential.

There are some long travelling days on this trip as we cover a great deal of land. The road to the High Atlas Mountains is very windy, please take this into consideration if you or your child suffer from motion sickness.

Just leaving a review to share how much I enjoyed my Central America trip. I thought the guide, Aura was so knowledgeable and organised and clearly a great ambassador for Intrepid. She gave us lots of information on each region, helped us organise anything we needed and dealt with queries from passengers very well and diplomatically. She made the trip run smoothly. She was also keen to explain the Intrepid vision and how the company values making a difference to locals and is a credit to your company. I did Guatemala and beyond and thoroughly enjoyed it - very fast paced, lots to see and do and a great overview of the region. I would definitely recommend 👍

I just completed my first Intrepid tour which was 33 days travelling around Central America - I had the time of my life! It was great to have the benefit of a guide (Fluffy was amazing!) and be able to ask questions at any point, but I also liked the freedom that you were permitted throughout. The group tour made boarder crossings seamless and the whole process felt easy - there was never one hiccup. As a solo female traveller, I felt safe throughout, and I cannot recommend Central America enough - the people, the food, the sun and the activities were just amazing :) Can't wait to book my next adventure soon!

I have just come back home after doing Intrepid's 10-day Vietnam Express Northbound tour. What a SUPERB tour. We saw lots and did lots, it was jam-packed full of sights and activities. Our tour leader, Tam, was the best ever. Very knowledgeable, organised and lots of fun too. The other 10 people on the group were all lovely. The places we visited were very interesting. We even visited local homes and ate just like the local people do. I highly recommend Intrepid to anyone considering touring a new country. This was my 5th tour with them and they have consistently been fantastic.

I have travelled with Intrepid a number of times now and can't recommend them enough. The trips are always exciting, full of history and immersive in the culture and environment. The office staff are great too and always happy to help with any questions you might have. Everywhere I have gone with the company has been different but the guides and itinerary have always been excellent and full of knowledge and passion for their country. Add in the social responsibility angle the company has and it top quality ethical practice and you can't go wrong

15-Mar-2024

I recently went on an 11 day tour of India with Intrepid and was impressed with every aspect of the tour, the tour leader and the organisation behind the scenes. I always travel alone so it was a big deal to join a tour, I didn't want to feel less independent or ferried about. I loved being part of a group and the things we saw and did on the tour, I would never have known about or seen if I had been by myself. I loved it from start to finish. Yes the overnight trains were not easy to sleep on, but I managed. Meeting locals on board was a high light for me. English is widely spoken in India and its amazing who you strike up a chat with. I had two problems on the tour - one my own fault and one hotel related. The support from Intrepid was amazing. I cannot thank them enough for going the extra mile to support me. I recommend Intrepid 100% and have gone from thinking an organised tour is for people who don't know about Lonely Planet and can't do solo stuff, to realising its a faster, better, more fun way to get to know a country truly and deeply whilst on a bit of a budget. I will book again and again with Intrepid. I loved it that much! Big thanks to tour leader Daddy H. Devender for his help on day one, and Nick in the Oz office for his fab customer care skills. Also the person who staffed the emergency whatsapp in India - you saved my sanity helping me get there a day late! THANK YOU ALL X

North American Adventure

12-Oct-2021

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

I have just completed a 12 day food tour of Vietnam, and had an amazing time. Our tour leader was great, knowledgeable and kind, who helped throughout the trip with recommendations for places on our free days, and spas. All the food we tried was delicious. It is a very fast paced tour, and Bon tried to maximise our experiences for the best.

13-Aug-2024

We had a fantastic time on the Botswana Highlights tour recently. We chose Intrepid because it seemed to suit what we wanted - well planned itinerary, small group, comfortable without being overly luxurious (and pricey), and supportive of the local community and environment. We weren't disappointed, and as we met with other like-minded travellers then we all had a great time. We are already planning our next Intrepid tour - maybe Vietnam & Cambodia :-)
